I’ve always dreamt of the day I could hold a holographic molecule or DNA structure in my hand like ironman. And that day is finally here!

The Quest Pro’s new pancake lenses provide a crisp view, and when you take off the optional side covers, the way your peripheral vision blends in with the headset is magical. It’s truly freeing to have high fidelity, color pass through mixed reality in a wireless headset. I could move around confidently without worrying about stubbing my toe on a coffee table. I could even take notes on my whiteboard and sip my morning coffee without leaving my virtual Nanome workspace.

## Nanome 1.24 release Highlights;
1. Mixed reality passthrough on all-in-one devices, such as Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2
2. Customize your avatar to your heart’s content using 3rd party avatars (Meta Avatars 2.0)
3. Seamlessly collaborate with automatic presenter changing (manual presenter change no longer required)
4. Use your real-world desk as a virtual whiteboard (aka BYODesk)
5. Teleport changes (no more accidental teleportation)
6. Updates to Wrist Menu
7. Access new spatial recordings without app updates via the Content Discovery Menu

![Nanome 1.24 Update Banner](https://nanome-cms.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/nanome_1_24_BLOG_f8d1780650.png)
## Mixed Reality Passthrough Support for All-In-One Devices, Starting with Quest Pro and Quest 2

via GIPHY

As we started to support passthrough mixed reality with the Varjo XR 3 in Nanome v1.23, we strongly believe the rise of mixed reality is the next major step for modern spatial computing headsets. As a recap, Mixed reality (MR) is a user environment in which physical reality and digital content are combined in a way that enables interaction between real-world and virtual objects. Modern virtual reality headsets use built-in external-facing cameras that are used for inside-out tracking to also use them to stream real-world content to their users.

While previous generations of virtual reality headsets had low-resolution black and white cameras exclusively for controller tracking, newer devices like the Meta Quest Pro headset are paving the way forward with higher resolution and color-supported cameras. This enables users to comfortably see the room around them and have all the benefits of virtual reality headsets (e.g. wide field of view, controller tracking, etc).

Please note: While this Nanome 1.24 update is mostly focused around the Meta Quest Pro headset and its features, some of these features will not be available to other XR devices until later this year. (such as Vive focus 3 and others.)

With this latest software update, we will be introducing mixed reality as the default mode for the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro devices.

## Custom 3rd party avatars (Meta Avatars 2.0)

via GIPHY

Our in-house avatars will always hold a special place in our hearts, but we’re massively increasing your avatar customizability by supporting third-party avatar systems. This first avatar system we’re adding is Meta’s Avatars 2.0 offering.

The new avatars contain tons of dedicated designs and features to amplify your feeling of presence. Using a Meta device, you can customize your avatar with a wide variety of hairstyles, looks, and outfits. Can’t find one that represents you? Reach out to us, and we’ll try to include one for you in our future releases or patches.

Customizable avatars will only be available on Meta devices, but you can select one of our new presets from any XR device!

These avatars also work with Nanome’s spatial recordings! There is an incredible difference in the look and feel of the recordings that will be sure to change the dynamic of your recordings.

We look forward to hearing your impression of these new avatars!

## Easier Collaboration through Intuitive Presenter Changes (manual presenter change no longer required)

via GIPHY

With passthrough mixed reality, our goal is to allow you to say “here you go” and hand a molecule over to another user. In 1.24, we’re introducing a feature where the Presenter Mode switches to the user who is grabbing a structure. Please note: presenter mode will not change if any user is grabbing the structure. This makes it significantly more natural to change presenters when you’re collaborating on molecular structures. We think you’ll love this new feature and can’t wait to hear how you use it to collaborate with your colleagues!

## Bring your own desk (BYODesk) and use it as a whiteboard

via GIPHY

Now that mixed reality is here, you might feel tempted to snap virtual windows to the physical surfaces around you. As a first step in that direction, you can now use your physical desk as a virtual plane/surface in Nanome.

When you open the whiteboard, you'll be able to set up your desk as a virtual surface. You can grab and position the whiteboard over your desk, snap it to the grid plane, and write on it. It’s a wonderful quality of life feature, and we plan to extend this to other types of Nanome menus and even physical walls.

## Teleport Changes

via GIPHY

We’ve heard your feedback; it’s easy to accidentally teleport when you’re first getting started with Nanome. To address this, teleporting will be disabled by default. You can always reenable teleporting from the wrist menu. If you’re in passthrough mixed reality, you’ll also notice that this is what enables you to teleport around. We hope this prevents awkward moments from accidentally teleporting on top of your colleagues!

## Content Discovery Menu

via GIPHY

With the launch of Nanome on the official Quest Store, we plan to make much more recorded content available. Prior to 1.24, we had to release a new patch/update every time we wanted to release new spatial recordings. We’ve replaced the Advanced Tutorial menu with the new Content Discovery menu, which can display new recordings as soon as we create them. Be sure to check out some of our new spatial recordings!

We are incredibly excited to bring Nanome v1.24 to the Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2. Try it out as soon as you can to experience the most advanced and breathtaking scientific collaboration tool ever invented.

Have a different XR device that supports mixed reality passthrough?
